On Saturday, six Chelsea Bulldogs competed in six different events at the State Track and Field meet in Zeeland and set three school records.

“An outstanding performance by the state meet crew this year in Zeeland,” said coach Eric Swager.

Chris Roush set a school record in the 400 meters by running 49.87 and finishing 5th place.

Tom Oates set a school record of 4:15.14 while taking runner-up honors. He also finished all state (6th) in the 800 run, and competed in the 3200 meter run.

Liam Heaney was all state in the 1600, finishing in 4:19.1, which is now 5th fastest in school history

The 4×800 relay of Heaney, Oates, Connor Gilbreath, and Carson Rabbitt smashed the former school record by running 7:52.65 and finishing 3rd.

James Mida competed in the discus, throwing 126.6

“This cumulative effort earned us 8th place in the state for 2017,” Swager said, adding, “The meet had 59 scoring teams, and 150+ teams compete in Division 2 each year. Another outstanding finish,” he said.

“Tom clearly had a special day, competing in all four distance events (a rare feat in itself), placing in 3 of them and setting 2 school records. His 800 time was less than half a second off the school record as well. Other lifetime bests were turned in when it mattered – so we went out on a high note,” Swager said.

Thanks again to all parents, coaches, administrators, and fans who made 2017 track another memorable season.
