My Name is Michael Hanna and I am in Boy Scouts, Chelsea Troop 425. I am collecting cans (pop, beer or any returnables) for my Boy Scout leader Mark Schroeder. He was recently diagnosed with oral cancer and is going through major surgery and treatment. He will be unable to work for an undetermined time.

When I first started Boy Scouts, he took me under his wing and helped me early on in scouts, figuring out the ropes and making me feel welcome. On an outing for completion of a badge, he gave me a pocket knife, which made me feel very special because he took it out of his own personal collection.

For our troop he has been a great leader but most important a good friend to all the boys in the troop.

I have set a goal to raise $1,000 to help Mr. Schroder and his family. So if you have any cans (returnables) that you could donate, it would help me to reach my goal and most important it would help someone who is in need.

This is just a little that I can do to give back for what he has done for me and my fellow Boy Scouts.

Mr. Schroeder is a man who I admire so much.”

There are two drop off points for deposit bottles and cans in town: 411 Fairways Lane, 1333 Carston Lane.

In addition, a Go Fund Me page has been started here.

Schroeder-scout-masterFrom the Go Fun Me Page: “You might not know Mark personally, but I bet that you someone that Mark has helped.  He has mentored hundreds of scouts in Washtenaw and the surrounding counties, is Scoutmaster to both Chelsea and Stockbridge boys with Troop 425, has worked on dozens of Eagle projects for charities and churches around Washtenaw county, First Robotics at Chelsea when his son was in school, you name it, Mark has participated as a volunteer. ”

“Mark believes in everyone, gives without expecting anything in return and works his hands to the bone.  He would give anyone, anything; he would help anyone in need.  He does help anyone in need.  But, Mark’s not one to ask for help.  Mark’s a blessing to our town and our world.”

Last week was the scout’s summer camp week, and it’s the first time the Schroeders have missed it in 15 years. He and his wife, Michelle, are dedicated to scouting and have worked not only with our troop, but also with scouts across several counties through the Deer Trails program (National Youth Leadership).
