With Friday deadline, two have applied for open council seat

So far, two Chelsea residents have applied for the open seat on the City Council as Friday’s deadline approaches.

Tuesday night, City Manager John Hanifan reminded residents that the deadline to apply for the seat is Friday, Nov. 30 at 4 p.m. and there is an application form on the city’s website.

This is the second time this year that the City Council will conduct interviews for an open seat. This time, council members will fill the spot to be vacated by County Commissioner-elect Kent Martinez-Kratz.

Hanifan reminded residents of the process, and candidates will be interviewed by the City Council on Tuesday, Dec. 4 beginning at 6 p.m. in half-hour increments. If additional interviews are needed, they will take place on Dec. 11.

On Jan. 8, the council will discuss the applicants and make their choice and the new council member will be sworn-in and attend the meeting as an official member.

The new council member’s term will end in November, 2013 as does that of Council Member Marcia White, who was appointed to fill a vacancy when Bill Holmberg moved out of the city.
