WWRA asks residents to please stop dumping trash at recycling bin sites

The Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) is asking residents to help control the dumping of illegal trash at its recycling bin sites. It is expensive to dispose of this illegally dumped trash, and that cost is passed on to you, the taxpayer.

The amount of trash found with the recycling doubled this year over last year, to over 20,000 pounds per week, and so did the cost to dispose of this trash. This trash must be manually sorted out by human hands, and this takes a lot of time, officials said.

So please, even though it may seem convenient to dump trash in the recycling bins, or at the sites, it still costs money to dispose of it. The WWRA wants to lower the operational assessment paid by residents, but this will not happen until the illegal dumping stops.

The best way assist the WWRA in resolving this situation is to be vigilant at the bin sites. If you see someone dumping trash, get their license number, or take a picture. There is a $500 reward for information leading to the conviction of an illegal dumper.

The WWRA Board of Directors wishes to provide residents with convenient, cost effective recycling. Please help to achieve this goal. See wwrarecycles.org for more information.
