With less than three weeks remaining before the start of school on Sept. 2, Superintendent of Schools Andy Ingall told the Board of Education that it looks like enrollment may increase in the Chelsea School District.

At the Board of Education’s Aug. 11 meeting, Ingall said that school principals are back at work getting ready to mail out class lists at all four district schools.

There will be open houses at the schools later this month:

  • On Wednesday, Aug.  27 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Beach Middle School.
  • On Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Chelsea High School.
  • On Thursday, Aug. 28, from 4-6 p.m. at North Creek Elementary School.
  • On Thursday, Aug. 28 from 5-7 p.m. at South Meadows Elementary School.

Teachers return on Aug. 27, and among them are two who were just approved by the school board.

Kelsey Miller will be a .67 Global Studies and Math teacher at Beach Middle School.  She completed her student teaching at South Meadows two years ago and has worked for the Port Huron Schools and as a long-term substitute for fifth and sixth-graders at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish School in Plymouth.

Also approved was the hiring of Angela Boyer for the 1.0 Beach Middle School Spanish and District English Language Learning Coordinator position.

“Angela really likes the philosophy in foreign language that we have in the Chelsea school district,” Ingall told the school board.

In other action, the board approved the Civil War Class field trip to Gettysburg, PA from Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2014 and also approved the Chelsea House Orchestra field trip request to Edinboro, PA from Sept. 5-7, 2014.

Ingall also told the board about a donation from the Kiwanis Club of Chelsea for $1,000 to the Chelsea Community Education Pre-School program, which was matched by Cathy Payne. Ingall said there are 16 seats open for the Great Start Readiness Program, a free, full-day preschool program for children who must be 4 years old on Oct. 1, 2014. Chelsea Community Preschool begins Sept. 8, 2014.

The Board of Education meets next on Monday, Aug. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
