2024 Chelsea Community Fair: Harrison Brothers Shine in Feeder Calf Show

Wesley and Brady Harrison of Grass Lake, who were reserve champion and champion feeder calf winners at Wednesday’s Chelsea Community Fair.

Frank, the grand champion feeder calf at the 86th Annual Chelsea Community Fair, has a unique story to tell.

That’s if feeder calves could speak English.

Turns out Frank’s owner, Brady Harrison of Grass Lake, loves to read to his feeder calf. Lately, the calf has been listening to him read Harry Potter books.

When asked how 11-year-old Brady chose Frank, turns out, the feeder calf picked him. Even though the black-and-white calf wasn’t Brady’s first choice.

Brotherly love. Wesley and Brady Harrison and their trophies from the feeder calf show.

Brady admitted that he’d picked another calf, but switched to Frank because the calf was very friendly and kept coming up to him and rubbing on him in the field, Brady said.

“Frank loved me very much – from the start,” Brady said.

Brady’s 8-and-a-half year old brother, Wesley Harrison‘s calf was chosen as reserve champion feeder calf Wednesday afternoon.

When asked about the significance of the calf’s name, Wesley said he likes to fish, and Wesley said he chose his calf because Fisher “just looked cool.”

This the Grass Lake brothers’ third year showing feeder calves at the Chelsea Fair.

Both brothers agreed that other kids should raise feeder calves for next year’s fair because they are “fun” and “if you work really hard, you’ll get far.”

Words that most farm kids learn early on and live by throughout their lives.
