Chelsea Kiwanis Club to hear about Ele’s Place

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Faith in Action Executive Director Nancy Paul updated Chelsea Kiwanis Club members about activities at the emergency service provider for the Chelsea and Dexter communities.

As she plans her retirement after leading Faith in Action for 15 years, the FIA board is accepting applications for her position. Among her recent accomplishments is working with Avalon Housing, the partnership resulting in the former Sharon Ann Apartments renovation and it qualifies as affordable housing in Chelsea.

Faith in Action began as an outreach program at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in 1980 by Rev. Jerry Beaumont. He spread the idea of an emergency food pantry, free clothing room, financial help with utilities and lodging to other church congregations. Now 17 churches, Chelsea and Washtenaw United Way’s, Food Gatherers, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, scouting groups, many volunteers and dozens of community groups work to insure help is there for those in need.

The Annual Benefit Banquet will take place at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea on April 27 to support Faith in Action.

Monday, club members will hear from Ele’s Place Development Director Bree Arvai and Rick Eder.

Ele’s Place is a healing center for grieving children and teens. Each week, peer support group programs help hundreds of children, ages 3-18, learn how to cope and begin to heal after the death of a parent, sibling, or other significant person. Program groups are free to all families.

Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to enjoy our speakers and learn about Kiwanis.
