Five students from Chelsea High School placed third in Class B in the Michigan High School Quiz Bowl State Championship held at Michigan State University (MSU) over the weekend.

And, William Fredenberg earned a Class B All-state speaker award.

The annual tournament is sponsored by the MSU Honors College. Former Senate Majority Leader Dan L. DeGrow created the tournament as an annual event 32 years ago.

Approximately 500 students from 59 high schools across Michigan competed in this year’s championship. State Quiz Bowl consists of three simultaneously run tournaments: Class A, Class B and Class C/D.

Class B finalists were: Ludington High School that finished first, Detroit Country Day School that finished second and Chelsea High School finishing in third.

The competition is double-elimination and is open to quiz teams that have won either a league championship or major tournament at some point this season. All three championship teams are eligible to compete in other nationwide quiz bowl competitions.
