A letter from the Chelsea Superintendent of Schools

Dear Families of the Chelsea School District:

As we attempt to process and understand the tragic events that occurred this past Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, CT, we know that many families are wondering about what is being done within the school district.

First, we are focused on support for our students, staff and families. Over the weekend we posted several articles on our home page that provide tips for parents and families as they talk to their children about this type of event.

This morning, we met with our key administrators, counselors, social workers, and psychologist to make plans to watch for and support anyone in need.

We even had several retirees volunteer to come in this morning to assist as needed. In addition, we did have an enhanced adult presence in our elementary buildings this morning to make sure that students, staff, and families had the support needed.

Regarding school safety, please be assured that we currently have thorough and well-rehearsed crisis/emergency plans as well as standard safety procedures in place for our staff and students.

This terrible tragedy will certainly cause us to take another look at our plans to make sure we’ve done everything we can to be prepared and secure. We’ll be paying close attention to the experts, including local law enforcement, as we learn about new recommendations and procedures.

The safety of our students and staff continues to be critically important to us.

Sincerely,

Andrew D. Ingall

Superintendent

Chelsea School District
