At the Aug. 19 Chelsea City Council meeting, City Manager Marty Colburn reminded everyone that school starts in the Chelsea School District on Monday, Aug. 26, which means giving yourselves more time out on the roads.
Improvements are coming to a number of Chelsea streets following the council’s approval of a bid to include slurry seal on about 2.75 miles of local roads.
Council members approved the bid from Pavement Maintenance Systems, LLC (aka Evergreen Roadworks) in the amount of $222,833.71. Slurry seal will be applied to Orchard Street, East Summit Street, Van Buren Street, East Street (south half), Washington Street, Elm Street, Hickory Bluff Lane, Chantilly Lane, Shiloh Drive, Savannah Lane, Taylor Lane, and Vicksburg Drive. Slurry seal is used to lengthen the useful life of streets, and the project is set to be completed in the spring of 2025.
Also approved was a bid award to Parks Installation & Excavating for what’s being called the “Big Dig” and storm sewer bid for Main Street Park. Council approved the site storm sewer portion to include items 7, 7a, 8b, 10 and option 9a for sewer replacement costs in the amount of $147,025. Site work is set to begin Oct. 1 and last into mid-November.
Council adopted on Second Reading Ordinance No. 187 Local Officers Compensation Commission (LOCC) that will become effective 30 days from publication. It’s up to the city attorney and city manager to develop an ordinance outlining the role and responsibility of the LOCC.
Council asked for a language change on Aug. 5 to read “The local officers compensation commission shall consist of five members, who shall be registered electors of the city and who shall be appointed by city council.” Colburn said the city now needs five individuals to step up and serve in this role.
Also approved was a purchase order for $61,261.45 payable to Power Line Supply for electrical wire for the city’s Electric Department.
City Council meets next on Tuesday, Sept.3, at 7 p.m. because of the Labor Day Holiday on Monday.
