(Almost) first month in review: publisher’s letter to readers

Straw delivery for the animals in the Nature's Creation of Life building.

Chelsea Update is truly a labor of love from me to this community, and the last month of my life has been both the busiest and the most fun I’ve had in my 32 years in the news business.

The people of Chelsea and the surrounding townships have opened their arms and hearts to me with their amazing stories. It’s been both an honor and a privilege to write them for you.

And although I’m writing the stories, please know that this is the community’s site. If you want to see a news item about the Chelsea community, all you need to do is give me a call with an idea at 433-1052, or, send me an email at [email protected] or just stop me in the street (or at the fair)  and ask. I will make that story happen.

From what I’ve been hearing, you’ve been enjoying all the aspects of the community that I’ve captured in both photographs and in words thus far. And I look forward to continuing to provide that coverage for many years to come. But, as many of you know, I gave up a full-time job at AnnArbor.com to follow this dream of having my own Chelsea-centric Website.

And if you’ve been reading the posts on this site since its launch on July 23 or have signed up for the daily newsletter or its Facebook page, then you know how hard I’ve been working and how many stories I’ve been writing seven days a week to keep you informed of what’s going on in town.

I’ve been so busy and having so much fun bringing you the news, it’s now time to ask for something in return — your monetary support. Although I had high hopes of winning the Powerball drawing this week (smile) that didn’t happen, so now I’m asking for your help.

If you’re a local business owner, please consider advertising on the site. The introductory rate is only $50 a month and you’d be supporting one of your own … a local business owner who is reaching your target audience and has been supporting your business for many years.

And if you’re a reader and appreciate what I’ve been doing, please consider making a donation to Chelsea Update in any amount. Every little bit will help keep this site going. Checks can be sent to Chelsea Update, 18829 Bush Road, Chelsea, MI 48118.

I decided to do this because I thought this community deserved a news source of its own — a place to find all-Chelsea community news, all-the-time. There are a lot of fine places to get your news, but I hope you’ll look to Chelsea Update as the most sincere pumpkin in the pumpkin patch. It’s a source that’s written by someone who truly knows, believes in, and loves this community.

So I want to thank everyone for your amazing support and to the organizations and individuals who have already sent donations to Chelsea Update, thank you so much. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate it.

I also want to give a shout out to Chelsea Update readers for your eagle eyes. As a one-woman band who is taking almost 99 percent of the photos you see on the site and writing 99 percent of stories, thank you for your friendly emails and phone calls pointing out any typos or goofs. Without a copy desk to read behind me, mistakes will happen, so I really appreciate the kind ways that you’ve pointed them out to me.

I always want to provide you with fair, balanced and accurate information. So, if you see something’s that’s amiss, don’t be afraid to point it out to me and it will be noted and corrected immediately.

As you can imagine, fair week will be an extremely busy time for me. But once fair is over, I’ll do my best to have new Rock Photos for the gallery and I plan to get back to reviewing cozy mysteries as I did at AnnArbor.com in Cozy Corner. Plus, I’ve been lining up more arts and entertainment stories as well.

That said, I welcome your suggestions, appreciate your readership, and can’t wait to see everyone at fair.

  1. Having grown up in Chelsea during the 40’s and 50’s I have a very warm spot in my heart for my hometown. I enjoy receiving your updates. after subscribing to the Standard for many years, somehow it changed when Walter and Helen May Leonard sold the paper and retired. Unfortunately Corporate America took over publishing this great Chelsea asset and it’s relavance to me declined to the point of not renewing my subscription a few years ago. We’ve lived in Kalamazoo for nearly 4 decades now and our hometown paper here seems to be going the way of the Ann Arbor News. Guess that is progress as I read the Gazette on line!

You mention “The Rock”. I have a story about the first painting of the rock outsude the old, old school that I would like to share with you. All I have to do is find it!!!

Stay tuned and thanks for your good work.
