Beach Middle School student and gymnast Angelia Daman took the all-around title at the Wolverine Classic last weekend with a score of 37.2  points (out of a possible 40 points).

Daman, 12, trains at Gym America in Ann Arbor.

More than 900 gymnasts competed in meet, which was held at Saline Middle School.

“This was the best meet of her career,” her mom, Erika Daman said. “But it was even more significant because she has overcome a broken back and has only been competing in all events – floor, bars, vault and beam – for two weeks.”

“Her dad and I, Sylvan Township residents, are really proud of her,” Erika Daman said, adding, “She has struggled with this injury for a year and a half. Her perseverance in the face of adversity is amazing for a 12-year-old young lady.”

Nick Angel, principal of Beach Middle School, said, “Angelia is a special young lady who has overcome a lot. We are really proud of her accomplishment this past weekend.”
