Beware of fungal diseases in your garden

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Jennifer Fairfield, owner of The Garden Mill, for the information in this story.)

Here’s a reminder to everyone growing fruits and vegetables in Michigan.

With all the wet and hot weather we’ve been getting, there is an increased risk of disease in our plants.

Michigan is in a “yellow zone” for late blight risk, and downy mildew has been spotted in the area. The only way to keep these and other fungal diseases out of your garden is to treat your plants before they are infected, and keep treating them throughout the season.

In other words, treat them “early and often.” The Garden Mill carries a couple of products that do a good job on these problems, including my favorite – Actinovate.
