For the third year in a row, the Chelsea Boys’ Track and Field team won the Whitmore Lake Relays.

“Our goal on this wet, cold night was to make the best of the situation,” said Head Coach Eric Swager.

“This included maintaining a positive attitude, and doing proper warm-ups and cool-downs,” Swager said, adding that a lot of athletes stepped-up and delivered “fine performances, highlighted by the 4×1600 relay team” of Zack Rabbitt, Jacob Stubbs, Tony Vermilye, and David Trimas.

The relay team broke the school record by more than 20 seconds, turning in the No.1-4 fastest times in the entire field.

“The current crop of distance/middle distance runners is as deep as I have ever coached, and among the best in the entire state,” Swager said, adding, “Much of the credit goes to their competitive attitudes and their willingness to work hard all winter and weekends.”

The team won more than half the events, and medaled in all but four.

Some of the sprinters/hurdlers are starting to get in shape, and there are some bright spots in the field events as well.

The team’s next big dual meet is against Adrian this week.

Swager invited all sports fans to this Friday’s Chelsea Relays, which will be held at the high school track with field events beginning at 2:30.

Running events will begin at 3:30 p.m.

“Come down and enjoy a fun afternoon for the whole family,” the coach said.
