Michigan’s professional organization of school athletic directors, the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA), has selected Brad Bush of Chelsea Public Schools as Regional Athletic Director of the Year.

He joins Jason Morris, assistant Athletic Director at the high school and AD at Beach Middle Schools as two of only 14 administrators state-wide to be honored by the MIAAA, Bush will be presented the award at the MIAAA Annual Conference in Traverse City this year.

He came to Chelsea Public Schools after 4 years as a teacher and coach at East Kentwood High School. The 2020-2021 school year marks Bush’s 24th year working for the Chelsea Public Schools in some capacity as a teacher, administrator and coach.

Superintendent of Chelsea Schools Julie D. Helber said, “The Chelsea School District’s athletic department is in such good hands with A.D. Brad Bush and Assistant A.D. Jason Morris, both of whom were recently honored with Regional Athletic Director of the Year through MHSAA.  Their tireless work on behalf of the District’s athletes is valued throughout the District and community. Thank you, Mr. Bush and Mr  (Jason) Morris and congratulations on a well-deserved honor.”

Chelsea High School Principal Michael Kapolka said in a press release, “In my estimation, what sets Brad apart from others is his advocacy at the regional and state level for interscholastic athletics. Brad has previously served as the President of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association and has also served on multiple athletic committees at the MHSAA. Furthermore, to simply use the title of “Athletic Director” for Mr. Bush does not accurately measure his overall worth to our educational and athletic culture in Chelsea.”

Bush earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1993 from Eastern Michigan University and followed that up with a Master’s Degree in Sports Management and Physical Education in 2000.

He served on the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association during the past two decades, becoming president during his tenure.

In 2015, he was named AP coach of the year in Michigan for football and has earned regional coach of the year eight times. In 2019, Bush was elected to the MHSFCA Hall of Fame.

During the last 24 years, Bush has spent time on many local and school related committees in Chelsea. He also served as an assistant coach at his alma mater Eastern Michigan University before coming back to Chelsea.

The MIAAA is a 50+year old association with nearly 700 members serving as athletic administrators in numerous high schools and junior high/middle schools in Michigan. As partners with the Michigan High School Athletic Association, the MIAAA works to promote the educational value of interscholastic athletics and the role and profession of athletic director. The MIAAA is very proud to spotlight the work of Brad Bush, a man whose work and values best mirror those of the association.
