Sue Whitmarsh, owner of Breathe Yoga in Chelsea, has had to keep her studio closed during the pandemic, but she continues to offer something called Breathe Gives Karma Yoga, the practice of service to the community.

Recently, the St. Joe’s Wellness Produce Basket became the Breathe Gives Karma Yoga project.

“I realized that I really wanted to support both our local healthcare workers and our local farmers who may be struggling financially at this time,” said Whitmarsh. “This campaign achieved both!”

At the Chelsea Farmers Market July 11, held at Palmer Commons, volunteers worked with market manager Emily Griswold to pack bags with fresh produce donated by vendors that included Jacob’s Fresh Farm, Goetz Family Farm, Two Track Acres, and Tantré Farm.

“I’m so pleased to be part of this collaboration,” said Griswold.

She distributed the bags of fresh produce to essential workers at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea that same afternoon.

Whitmarsh said they raised $300 thanks to generous students and instructors, which meant close to 40 hospital employees benefited from the donations.

“This would not have been possible without the help and organizational skills of Emily Griswold, who acted as liaison and has a network that facilitate this idea,” said Whitmarsh.

  1. Sue is one of the most kind and compassionate people you will ever meet. She has been doing these “donation by yoga” classes for years and is a wonderful example of a small business owner who believes in giving back. If you need a great way to exercise and stay connected during this pandemic (and after), I would strongly recommend Breathe Yoga. Yoga is for all body types and fitness levels, is very body-positive, and encourages a holistic approach to life. And her instructors are fantastic! Sue and Breathe Yoga are wonderful resources to have in our community.
