Chelsea High School Senior Jordan Fansler will be going to the University of Michigan next fall to study engineering. What’s particularly notable is that it’s being paid for entirely by a scholarship, in part thanks to Fansler’s experience as a golf caddy.

It’s called the Chick Evan’s Scholarship, and Fansler is one of 30 Michigan students who was recently awarded the four-year housing and tuition scholarship, which is based on a strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need, and outstanding character. It’s valued at $120,00.

Fansler started caddying the summer after his freshman year of high school at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor.

“In my time caddying, I’ve come to really enjoy the sport,” said Fansler. “It’s been a great experience caddying at Barton Hills, and I plan to continue caddying there this summer.”

Fansler had a cousin who received the scholarship a decade ago, and he decided to apply for it last year.

In addition to enjoying golf, he plays high school basketball and soccer. His favorite subjects are math and science, and he participates in student council.

“One of the reasons that I’ve enjoyed growing up in Chelsea so much is that I’ve had the chance to make some really great friends,” said Fansler. “I’ve been playing sports and going to school with a lot of them since elementary school. I feel like my time at Chelsea High School has really prepared me for college.”

He chose to attend the University of Michigan because of its well respected engineering program and so that he could still be close to home.
