CAFA Board Elects Officers; Chief Proposes Possible Part-Time Fire Inspector Position

The Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) Board unanimously re-elected its current slate of officers at the board’s annual meeting held via Zoom on Jan. 19.

Tom Osborne was re-elected as the chairman, Craig Maier as vice chairman, Tom Demske as secretary and Kurt Koseck as treasurer.

The CAFA board also unanimously voted to continue meeting at 9 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month and to set the next annual meeting date for Jan. 18, 2022.

It’s expected that CAFA meetings will continue to be held via Zoom through the end of March in following the state’s pandemic Open Public Meetings Act guidelines. Once in-person meetings are allowed, it’s expected that the board will resume meeting in the Chelsea City Council Chambers inside the Police Station building.

At the CAFA Board’s regular meeting, which followed the annual meeting, Fire Chief Rob Arbini reported he is looking at possibly adding a part-time fire inspector to the authority’s fire staff positions.

This would allow a staff inspector to annually visit the businesses within the fire authority’s municipalities of the City of Chelsea and the townships of Lima, Lyndon and Sylvan and check that all emergency regulations, such as functioning exit lights were in order.

In addition, it would be a way to annually update records with the locations of gas turn-off’s and other emergency evacuation measures.

Arbini said he’s looking at perhaps 1,000 hours or less a year, but has not determined a pay scale or rank as he further investigates this position.

He said he plans to explore this possible position further and bring his recommendations back to the board in the next few months.

The next CAFA Board meeting is planned for Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 9 a.m. via Zoom.

(Publisher’s note: Chelsea Update continues to publish the CAFA Board packets and Zoom instructions online the day before the board meetings for anyone who is interested in learning more.)
