The past two meetings of the Chelsea Rotary Club have been outstanding as we hosted exceptional guests.

Chef and restaurateur Craig Common visited the club on Feb. 20 to share background on Sounds and Sights, Chelsea’s premier summer concert series that will celebrate its 14th season this year.

As a co-organizer of the series, he emphasized that it is truly a community effort and expressed gratitude for the staff, volunteers, talent, and sponsors who play vital roles in its success. To recognize his service to the community and his commitment to the Rotarian ideals of service and goodwill, Common was inducted as an honorary Rotarian at the luncheon.

On Feb. 27, Bob Pierce discussed the history and good works of the Saturday Morning Challengers – a bowling league for people with developmental disabilities.

The league meets every Saturday at 9:30 at Bel-Mark Lanes, September through April. Bob and his wife, Nadine Anderson, began hosting the league in 1995, with the goal of providing a recreational opportunity for people with special needs.

Still going strong, Saturday Morning Challengers attracts bowlers from all over Washtenaw County, and its numbers have grown from 16 participants in its first year to more than 125 currently.

Rotary members were inspired by Bob and Nadine and the extraordinary work they do along with a dedicated corps of volunteers. The lunch culminated in a Rotary donation of $500 to the Saturday Morning Challengers, which was matched by an anonymous member donor for a total of $1,000.

Did you Know?

Did you know that the name “Rotary” is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices?
