As early as the end of next week, you may see the Chelsea Area Fire Authority new Rescue Squad vehicle responding to emergency calls.

The vehicle, originally owned by the US Air Force, has 15,000 miles on it and cost about $57,000 compared to the about $200,000 for a new vehicle.

It will carry the same rescue equipment such as Jaws of Life that the current rescue vehicle has for accidents or other rescues.

The vehicle can also be used for transport if there is a greater than 10-minute delay for Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) to arrive on a scene, and the patient is in a true emergency situation.

It’s better equipped and safer for transport than other vehicles in the fire authority fleet. And, it will serve as a safe and warm place for a patient to wait for HVA in the case of bad weather such as cold.

In the future, if needed, CAFA will have it licensed as a BEMS transport unit, which will allow transport to supplement the current service provided in the CAFA area.
