Chelsea Area Fire Authority to hire 3 new firefighters

Residents in the Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) area will see three new firefighters on the job this summer.

Fire Chief Rob Arbini told the CAFA board Tuesday morning, Feb. 19 that 16 people applied for the three open positions; three withdrew their applications because they’d found jobs in other departments.

He said he’s waiting on test results but expects interviews to take place in April and hopes to have the newest members of the department on the job by June 1.

In addition, Arbini said he expects the specialized trial bike called a Rokon, to be in Chelsea in about a month. The specialized trail bike will assist firefighters to gain access to victims in tight areas of local bike trails for emergency calls.

“We plan to train on it once the weather breaks,” he said.

Board Member Craig Maier offered kudos and thanked Lt. Derek Klink and firefighter Ian Ballard for providing medical assistance on Feb. 16 during a military funeral at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. There were several slip and falls and several older veterans needed assistance navigating icy conditions getting from their vehicles to the service and back again.

The board will next meet on March 19 at 9 a.m. in the Chelsea City Council Chambers inside the police building.
