Chelsea Community Fair: lamb, swine, steer, feeder calf youth ready livestock barns

The award for the best animal impression went to some of the Chelsea-Dexter Swine Club kids who piled in a pen to ham it up. This year, about 100 pigs will be shown on Tuesday, Aug. 20 in the Multi-Purpose Arena beginning at 5 p.m. with the showmanship classes.

For those who might not know, before you see the livestock shown at the 82nd Chelsea Community Fair, Aug. 20-24, the youth exhibiting their animals help the adults paint the pens and set them up each year.

They tend to their livestock throughout the fair, feeding, watering and cleaning their pens then return the Sunday after fair concludes to help take down the pens and clean the barns as well.

Thursday night, Aug. 8 was set up night and I asked some of the members of the lamb, swine, steer and feeder calf clubs to pose for a photo and to give me their best impressions of the animals they intend to show. (Youth may two two species of animals at fair.)

More silly photos below.

Here are some of the members of the Chelsea-Dexter-Grass Lake Lamb Club in a pen giving their best sheep impressions. They sounded quite authentic. About 50 lambs will be shown on Wednesday, Aug. 21 in the Multi-Purpose Arena beginning at 6 p.m. with showmanship.
Some of the Chelsea-Dexter Steer club members in one of the steer pens. Apparently, smiling was their idea of their best steer impression. The about 20 steer will be shown on Wednesday, Aug. 21 in the Multi-Purpose Arena a half hour after the conclusion of the feeder calf judging, which begins at noon. Showmanship classes go first.
With a little coaxing, a few of the youth showing feeder calves were willing to add their best calf impressions while standing in one of the calf pens. About 18 feeder calves will be shown on Wednesday, Aug. 21 beginning at noon in the Multi-Purpose Arena with the showmanship classes.
