Chelsea DDA approves new color scheme for light poles and signage

Folks driving through downtown Chelsea will soon see a progression of newly painted light poles and wayfaring signs with a new color scheme.

Gone will be the green light poles and burgundy and green signs with white lettering.

On July 16 during a Zoom meeting, the Chelsea Downtown Development (DDA) board approved a plan to paint all the light poles black to match the new signage that will feature a black background with white lettering outlined in gold for better readability.

The color scheme will match the colors chosen for Palmer Commons.

City Manager John Hanifan reminded the DDA board that the painting of the light poles and the sign changes would take place in a progression of sections throughout the downtown; not all at one time, and that outdated information would be changed.

The about $18,000 approved previously for the project will come from the DDA’s special projects fund.

Chelsea Development Director Julia Upfal told the board that Hatch Stamping, Sheridan Books and Chelsea Lumber Company were among the city’s businesses that received PPP loan funding. (See graphic below) In addition, she said that Ann Arbor Spark would be offering a new grant for Region 9 that includes Washtenaw County up to $20,000, but that at this point businesses that previously were awarded grants in the first round of funding would not be eligible.

She also let the board know that the consulting firm that was hired to assist the city to update its zoning ordinance would hold a community engagement session at the Saturday Chelsea Farmers Market on Aug. 1.

Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Terris Ahrens reminded the board that July was restaurant month each Wednesday in Chelsea and there were still two more Wednesday in the month to take advantage of those offering specials. He also reminded folks that on July 31, curling fest would take place at Arctic Coliseum and half the tickets had already been sold. On Sept. 9, the Chelsea and Stockbridge chambers of commerce will host a golf outing at Pierce Lake Golf Course.

He also reminded the board that July 26 is the deadline for nominations for the annual Citizen of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards.

He said more details about these events can be found here.
