Chelsea Education Foundation awards $22,000 in grants

The Chelsea Education Foundation (CEF) recently awarded more than $22,000 in its fall 2012 grant cycle to requests that ranged from $70 to $2,500.

“CEF grants support educational projects that benefit groups of all ages. For more than two decades, this local foundation has raised and managed funds in order to underwrite educational projects,” according to information from the press release.

This year’s grants funded a broad array of programs and projects from a field trip to a Civil War battlefield to an adopt-a-grandparent program and an extra-curricular science competition.

The grants from CEF help foster lifelong learning and fund things such as supplies and equipment that empower teachers, to inter-generational field trips that inspire learners, the information states.

Grant applications are solicited in September, reviewed by a committee of volunteer board members, and awarded in October.

“This quick turnaround gives educators the capacity to complete projects and fund programs that enrich the educational experience of students and citizens in and around Chelsea,” the information states.

CEF serves a vital and unique role in that the group is able to fund projects that might otherwise go unfunded. In fact, this year, $44,390 in requests were received.

The Chelsea Education Foundation provides funding for a wide spectrum of educational activities to benefit the residents of Chelsea. It was organized in 1991, as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization created to provide a link between school, business and community to help strengthen Chelsea’s future.

“Over the course of its history, CEF has invested hundreds of thousands of contributions in these worthy endeavors,” the information states, adding, “The board counts among its membership: local business owners, Board of Education members, school administration and staff, and area residents.”

Contributions to CEF are invested in scholarships to area college students, grants to teachers and others with great ideas, and sponsorship of community forums on important topics.

So, if you’d like to help, mark your calendar for CEF’s fundraiser, which will take place on Feb. 9, 2013 at the Chelsea Comfort Inn Village Conference Center.
