Chelsea firefighters visit two well behaved North Creek second grade classrooms

Chelsea firefighters visit Karen Flannery’s second grade classroom after the students were chosen for their good behavior.

More than 50 second-graders at North Creek Elementary School were visited by members of the Chelsea Area Fire Authority Monday morning — a special reward for their outstanding behavior in the lunchroom.

In fact, for teacher Amy Proos‘ second-grade classroom, it was the second time they’d won a visit from the firefighters. They were good listeners, used quiet voices and threw away their trash.

She said the students were awarded stickers by the lunch personnel and the class that has the highest number of stickers is awarded a visit from the firefighters where they eat pizza together, play games and ask the firefighters questions.

And, some of those questions were very cute.

  • Which firefighter is the craziest driver?
  • Which firefighter can run the fastest?
  • How old do you have to be to become a firefighter?
  • Who is the oldest firefighter in the house?
  • Can girls be firefighters?
  • Do you have a Dalmatian at the firehouse?

“We’d really like to thank Jet’s Pizza for their support,” said Fire Lt. Scott Basar, adding that the company donates the pizzas, and “They’ve been great to work with.”

Chelsea Area Fire Chief Jim Payeur said the kids love talking to the firefighters.

And Monday, they played a game of kickball, too.

In addition to Payeur and Basar were Fire Captain Derek Klink and firefighters Roger Chapman and Ian Ballard.

“It’s great to be role models for them and it’s nice to get to out and interact with them,” Payeur said, adding that he hopes that the program will continue next school year.
