The Chelsea Girl Scouts raised $2,595 in food donations during a food drive for Faith in Action held Nov. 2 at Polly’s Country Market, about $200 more than last year, and had a lot of fun doing it.

The Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts hold quarterly food drives for Faith In Action and have been coordinating food drives for the last 20 years.

Senior Girl Scout Troop 40274 and Troop 40507 planned, advertised, and coordinated the event. The troops consist of Megan Heydlauff, Rachel Hastings, Fallon Mosier, and Amanda Wright who have been involved in Girl Scouts for most of their lives.

“There’s a lot of hard work and organization that goes into organizing and running the food drive, but in the end it’s great to see all the good it does for the community,” said Wright.

A major part of the coordination was organizing a number of younger Girl Scout volunteers who were on-hand to pass out lists of needed supplies, encourage donating, and assist shoppers with their purchased items.

“It’s an effort that teaches the younger girls about giving back to the community and the needy,” said Wright. And it’s an effort well worth the time as future leaders are developing skills to continue community service and support in the Chelsea area.

The most important thing Wright would like people to remember is “that their donations are going to the community and helping people in need for this holiday season.”

This year’s donations will help Faith in Action feed local families for Thanksgiving as well as enable the organization to replenish their food bank in time for the Christmas holidays.

The two scout troops are supported by co-leaders Anita Mosier and Kelly Wright, but Mosier says that the girls in Troop 40274 and 40507 are the true leaders – needing very little direction from adults in planning and running their own activities.

“It is the hope and goal eventually for all the girls in our 17 Chelsea troops, ranging from kindergarten to 11th grade, that someday they will be the ones mentoring and coordinating the younger troops, just like the girls in Troop 40274 and 40507,” Mosier said.
