Earlier this week, Chelsea High School girls basketball coach Todd Blomquist announced he’s retiring from coaching.

Athletic Director Brad Bush said he informed the team on Monday after the OT loss in the district basketball game.

“As you can imagine, it was an emotional time for the girls and for Todd,” he said in an email to Bulldog coaches.

The girls team finished the season with a 17-4 record and an SEC championship.

“Todd’s teams have been a model of consistency over the years” adding that “in his 20 years as head coach, he has won over 300 games. This puts him in a very select company in the history of basketball in the state of Michigan.”

Bush said, “More importantly, Todd has created great relationships with his players. Each winter dozens of them come back to participate in the annual alumni game and watch the current team play games. “

The athletic director said, “he has been able to build a strong base of alumni that feel connected to the program and team.  That only happens through strong relationships with his players.”

Blomquist will continue teaching at the high school.

“I am sure that Todd will still be around Chelsea basketball as his young children grow up in our community,” Bush said, adding, “I want to thank Todd and his staff for all they have done.  I also want to congratulate him on a tremendous coaching career.”
