Chelsea girls track and field: 3 medals at Larry Steeb Meet of Champions

Chelsea High School took a small group of track and field athletes to the Larry Steeb Meet of Champions held at Dexter High School on Tuesday, May 28.

“This meet is a tune-up for the coming state meets for many schools in the greater Washtenaw County area,” said coach Loren Thorburn.”

“There is very good competition and the meet only awards medals to the top six places in each event,” Thorburn said.

Chelsea took home medals in three events.

Chelsea placed 6th in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:12.83. The relay team was made up of Kendra Patterson, Alyson Baize, Sarah Kennings, and Molly Mannor.

Chelsea placed 2nd in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 13:42.7. The legs and splits were the following: Morgan Kurth ran the 1200m leg in 4:10, Kate Gaiser ran the 400m leg in 72.8 seconds, Emily Chizek ran the 800m leg in 2:38.7, and Natalie Davies ran the 1600m leg in 5:41.4 seconds.

Finally, the 4x400m relay continued to lower their time to a season-best of 4:12.35 and placed 3rd overall. The team was led off by Makayla Kegerreis, followed by Kendra Patterson, Riley Thorburn, and anchored by Myranda Montoye.

Other athletes did well and hit solid standards and personal records (PRs).

Kate Gaiser ran a PR in the freshman 1600m with a time of 6:13.23.

Jordan Holton threw 98′ 0″ in the discus and finished 8th overall.

Kendra Patterson continued to run fast and was clocked at 17.39 in the 100m hurdles.

Reagan Lehman tied her PR with a vault of 9′ 3″, while her teammate Breanne Black PRed with a height of 9′ 3″.

Finally, Morgan Majeske threw 27′ 10.5″ in her final season competition.

The Chelsea girl’s track and field team will take six athletes to the State Meet held in Zeeland on Saturday, June 1.

The following athletes will compete Reagan Lehman in the pole vault, Jordan Holton in the discus, Makayla Kegerries, Kendra Patterson, Riley Thorburn, and Myranda Montoye in the 4x400m relay.
