Chelsea girls track and field competes well at D2 state meet

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Loren Thorburn for the information in this story.)

The D2 State Meet was held on Saturday, June 1, at the Zeeland Stadium in Zeeland, with 100-plus schools representing track and field athletes.

Chelsea qualified six athletes and competed in the discus throw, pole vault, and the 4x400m relay.

Coach Loren Thorburn said the athletes experienced three significant weather delays. The meet officially started at 9:30 a.m. with the pole vault and ended around 10 p.m. with the 4x400m relay event.

“Our athletes did a nice job staying focused throughout the long day and then competing well after the delays,” Thorburn said.

In the discus, Jordan Holton, a four-time varsity letter winner, threw 92′ 9″ in competition on Saturday to place 16th out of 22 throwers. She beat her seed by 3 places.

“Jordan has been one of our top point earners over the last four years,” Thorburn said, adding, “We are proud of how Jordan has competed and represented Chelsea throughout her time with us. Jordan is going on to throw discus and shot as well as compete in field hockey at Ohio Wesleyan University. She will be taking courses in the health field.”

In the pole vault, first-year track and field athlete Reagen Lehman, a junior, qualified for the State Meet based on her height at Regionals. She tied her PR at the State Meet by jumping 9′ 3″ on her first attempt.

Lehman ended up in a 3-way tie for 24th place out of 34 competing vaulters.

“Next year, our coaching staff is confident that Reagan can return to States and jump even higher heights. We are excited about Reagan’s potential in this event,” Thorburn said.

The 4x400m relay team (consisting of Makayla Kegerreis, Kendra Patterson, Riley Thorburn, and Myranda Montoye) were seeded 20th out of 25 teams in the event. They ran their season-best time of 4:11.03 and beat their seed by five places (15th out 24 teams).

All of these girls are returning next year.

“We are excited about the possibilities for next year given their potential and performances this year,” the coach said.

Thorburn thanked the coaches this season for making this memorable one.

Eric Swager leading the distance group supported by Mike Holik and Jen McPherson. Holik also helped with the timing system, which is a significant task, Thorburn said.

In the jumps, Jared Beaver coached the long jump, while Zac Snively coached the high jump in his first year with us. Both of these coaches helped in a variety of the other fashions. such as supporting the sprints workouts and handoffs as well as other administrative tasks, Thorburn said.

In the pole vault, first-year coach Vince Dettorre coached two vaulters who qualified for States. “We appreciate his positive and caring attitude,” Thorburn said.

Kari Goorhouse coached the throws and continued her streak of sending throwers to States.

Also, Bert Kruse, in his 57th year, coached sprinters and hurdles as well as assisting from time to time in the throws. “Our program would not be the same without him. He is Chelsea Track and Field,” Thorburn said.

Finally, a big thank you to Brad Bush and Tracie Stoffer for their assistance with our track program as well as other administrators, families, Chelsea Booster Club, and others in the community who support us in various of ways.

We could not do it without you, Thorburn said.
