Chelsea High School art students paint mural inside WSEC lobby

Fantastic Chelsea, Michigan isn’t just a flattering way to describe Chelsea. It’s also the theme of a mural now underway at the Washington Street Education Center.

Every Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon for the next few weeks, near the entrance that takes you to the weekly Chelsea Farmers Market, students from Chelsea High School are painting a mural with art teacher Geo Rutherford, who is spearheading the project.

“Most murals we do are in the high school,” said Rutherford. “This mural is thanks to a $5,000 anonymous donation to the Chelsea High School Art Department that will be received as long as we finish the mural.”

Rutherford says the donation came through the Chelsea Senior Center, which will also benefit from its proximity to the artwork.

Even if you miss the painting while it’s happening, it will decorate the main entrance to the building for the foreseeable future.

  1. I have been enjoying seeing the progress from week to week. I hope that there is a plan for a written description to accompany it.
