Chelsea High School closed Oct. 2 following bomb threat

Chelsea High School is closed today following the discovery of a “written message” found by a custodian Tuesday at about 5:45 p.m.

Below is the message from Superintendent Julie Helber that went out to district families last night.

Dear Chelsea School District Families:

The following message was just sent out to all Chelsea High School Families.  I want to make you aware of this situation and confirm with you that while Chelsea High School will be closed tomorrow, all other buildings will remain open on October 2, 2019.  Thank you.

Attention Chelsea High School students and parents.

It was brought to the attention of Chelsea School District administration this evening at approximately 5:45pm that there was a written message found by a Chelsea High School custodian in a restroom indicating that a bomb was present at the high school. Upon obtaining this information, the Chelsea Police Department and a Michigan State Police K-9 unit were deployed to Chelsea High School to search the building. Later in the evening, we received verification from law enforcement that the building was secure and that the incident was not a credible threat.

Given the nature and timing of this event, we are canceling classes at Chelsea High School for tomorrow, Wednesday, October 2, 2019 and the building will remain locked down so that district administration can continue to work with local law enforcement to fully investigate this matter.

Should you or your child have information related to this event, please contact Chelsea PD at 734-475-9122.

We will follow up with more information as it becomes available.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Dr. Julie Helber
