Gabby Dougherty from Chelsea High School was recently announced as the winner of the Congressional App Challenge for Michigan’s 7th District by Congressman Tim Walberg.
Her winning app, “G.L.A.M.,” educates the user about Michigan and the Great Lakes in a fun and interactive way. The user can learn through playing games, reading fun facts, looking at pictures, and playing trivia.
It will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol and featured on the House of Representatives website along with other winning entries from around the country.
“The Congressional App Challenge is a wonderful chance for students to have fun learning about coding and display their creativity at the same time,” said Walberg in a press release.
“Congratulations to Gabby on winning this year’s contest, and I appreciate her drive to share her love for Michigan and our treasured Great Lakes. In the digital age, I am proud to see students in our district pursue an interest in computer science, and I encourage them to continue to work hard and flourish in and out of the classroom.”
Second place was awarded to Nicole Stafford, John Manahan, and Morgan Kasper from Chelsea High School. They created an app entitled “J.M.N. Weather Games,” which informs children about the importance of weather safety through topics such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards.
The app cleverly uses a game to educate in an entertaining and informative way. They were inspired to create their app from interest in meteorological events.
The Congressional App Challenge, now in its fifth year, is a nationwide contest designed to highlight the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education by encouraging students to create an application for a mobile phone, tablet, or computer.
