Dozens of community members including many local veterans observed Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, at Chelsea’s Veterans Park.

Lima Township Supervisor and veteran Craig Maier led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by introductions of four local veterans by Chelsea Mayor Melissa Johnson.

“Welcome on behalf of the efforts and sacrifices of the men and women who served in the U.S. military,” said Johnson, who asked veterans to stand.

The first of the four veterans she recognized was Seaman Donald Doll, who served in WWII in the U.S. Navy. Doll has been active in the American Legion for 74 years.

Seaman Ed Sutliff served in the U.S. Navy in WWII, participated in the U.S. Navy Band, and has been active in the American Legion for 50 years.

He spoke fondly about playing in the Navy Band.

“I was sent to Pearl Harbor to play for those in submarines coming in and played at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel for officers,” said Sutliff. “Somebody had to do it!” he added with a chuckle.

Corporal Ernie Sadler served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was sent to France and served in the 14th Armored Division, officially nicknamed “Liberators”.

Staff Sergeant Alex Roskowski served in the Army Air Forces in WWII and was a flight engineer and gunner on a B-26 in England. He flew a total of 72 missions and shared the story of patching up an airplane’s gas line with his shirt, after which he and his fellow soldiers had to fly over the enemy. He called it his “worst flight.”

Johnson praised the veterans’ humility and thanked them after which Maier retired the colors, and Chelsea High School student Charlie Dahlgren played taps.

The Veterans Day observance was made possible thanks to the Chelsea District Library, the City of Chelsea, American Legion Post #31, VFW Post and Auxiliary Number 4076, and Silver Maples of Chelsea.
