Below is a Q and A to better understand Saint Joseph Mercy Health System’s recent announcement that it will be adopting a new name and logo across its Michigan facilities and what the implications are for Chelsea Hospital.

Q: What has Saint Joseph Mercy Health System rebranded to?

A: Trinity Health, our parent company, has renamed all eight Saint Joseph Mercy Health System hospitals in Michigan, and more than 300 other health care sites in the state.  Following a transition period over the next year, the name Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, will be retired, and Trinity Health’s name and logo will appear on all of our entities throughout the state.

Q: What does this mean for St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, which is a joint venture hospital with Michigan Health?

A: Because it is a joint venture hospital with University of Michigan Health, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea will not adopt the Trinity Health name.  The hospital’s name will be “Chelsea Hospital.”  Its signage will include the Trinity Health logo alongside the University of Michigan Health block M.

Q: What does this mean for patients? Are there any benefits for them?

A: The benefits really begin with being able to easily access health care.  By adopting the Trinity Health logo, patients and visitors will begin to see the size and scope of the Trinity Health network and the expansive list of providers and services available to them. They will realize that their own provider is part of a much larger interconnected network. And as a joint venture, patients have access to the vast service offerings of both Trinity Health and University of Michigan Health.

The rebrand will also improve Trinity Health’s ability to recruit and retain top-level talent in Michigan, including nurses and physicians, who are looking to join and grow within an organization with career advancement opportunities.

Q: Will my primary care physician change because of this rebrand?

A: All of our patients will keep the same doctors and health care providers they had before, however, this rebrand will better connect them to a network of clinical experts, clinical trials, research and specialty care, whether here in Michigan or in the 21 other states in which Trinity Health has medical facilities. University of Michigan Health patients will continue to have access to care in its system and at the joint venture Chelsea Hospital site.

Q: What does this rebrand mean for the partnership with University of Michigan Health?

A: Our relationship with University of Michigan Health is strong.  The partnership has seen tremendous growth since the joint venture agreement was entered into in 2018 and we expect that to growth to continue through this rebrand and into the years to come.

Q: In your opinon, what makes Chelsea Hospital a health care destination for local residents?

A: Our hospital is recognized annually for its commitment to patient safety and quality — two things that go hand in hand. We are also one of only a few hospitals in the country to have a double five-star rating from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

While our patients’ experience may feel like that of a small-town community hospital, we are anything but a small-town facility.

Since joining forces with University of Michigan Health in 2018 we have seen tremendous growth in our capabilities and in the services we provide. We have deployed innovative technologies in the hospital, and in robotic surgery. We have introduced the community to new services, including an expanded Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, bariatric surgery and urological surgery. It’s a really exciting time for our hospital and our community.
