Chelsea Human Rights Commission Hopes to Add to Civil Rights Training

By Lisa Carolin

Members of the Chelsea Human Rights Commission expressed positive feedback on the MDCR (Michigan Department of Civil Rights) virtual training session that took place on May 20 and that was planned for City of Chelsea staff and commission members.

HRC members who took part in the training shared comments including appreciating the interaction between participants and presenters, how well educated facilitators were, as well as suggesting that the implicit bias and anti-racist type of training could have also included members of the community.

To review materials from the MDRC training with the possibility of setting up a follow-up session, the HRC will hold a work session at 7 p.m. on June 23.

Also at the June 2 HRC meeting, Chairman Susan Morrel Samuels talked about the status of the HRC’s 2021 Plan. So far this year, the commission’s accomplishments include a work session to discuss its mission, reviewing and making changes to its by-laws, communicating with other HRCs in the state, and the MDCR training.

Future activities as part of the HRC’s 2021 Plan include a community read against racism working with Serendipity Books and the Chelsea District Library, and an MLK Day educational program.
