Chelsea Human Rights Commission votes to host discussion group

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission moved ahead on plans to host a discussion group in June. That was discussed at the HRC’s March 4 meeting.

The topic will be bullying, and HRC member Joanne Ladio has been in touch with an administrator at Chelsea High School as well as a therapist from Dexter, who serves on the Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights. The discussion group will be a community event rather than a school event.

HRC members voted to table more work on the discussion group as well as on city policies and ordinances due to the absence of HRC members Susan Morrel-Samuels and Rod Anderson.

Members who were present approved a work session for next Wednesday, March 11, at 6 p.m.

Also discussed was GARE, the Government Alliance on Race and Equity, the national organization of which Washtenaw County is a member. Chelsea HRC members want to learn more about the possibility of smaller communities joining GARE.

HRC members agreed to participate in a booth at the Chelsea Spring Expo on Saturday, April 18, at the Washington Street Education Center.

The HRC’s next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, April 1, at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers.
