Chelsea Kiwanis Celebrates Student Achievements (with Slideshow)

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Last Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club visited the Kiwanis Club of Saline instead of meeting at Chelsea Hospital.

Attending other club meetings in the area fosters fellowship and informs us of the community service performed by clubs in the Kiwanis family, (Kiwanis Clubs, Aktion Clubs, Key Clubs, Circle K Clubs, Builders Clubs, and K-Kids).

Another advantage is hearing from interesting speakers. Monday’s speaker was Dr. Michael McVey, https://www.emich.edu/coe/faculty-staff/m-mcvey.php

EMU professor and trustee on Saline School Board. He made a compelling presentation about his work to train school teachers, especially new ones, about how to use the latest technology in their classrooms.

He brought several examples:

– a drone with camera to give students a bird’s-eye view

– several items made with a 3D printer

– a lesson on artificial intelligence

The use of AI to create school writing assignments was scary. The computer can imitate the style of writing of a student in any grade, including adding spelling mistakes, to make it hard to catch cheaters. The only way to tell if the student is learning is verbally or writing during class.

Recently, we celebrated 40 students who have improved their grade point average during the school year. The BUG (Bring Up Grades) program honors students with a certificate and a pizza lunch.

Five students were recipients of Chelsea Kiwanis Club Foundation scholarships and those pictures are part of the slideshow below. The scholarship recipients were Tyler Cira, Madison Kay, Mikaila Leonard, Katherine Limoges, and Lia Spink.
