Last Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Matt Cunningham, athletic director/assistant principal and Jason Morris, dean of students/assistant athletic director at Chelsea High School. They underscored the importance of participation in sports to a student’s success.
Sixty-nine percent of students play at least one sport. There are 31 different ones available during the school year at the school: 12 sports in the fall, nine in the winter, and 10 in the spring. In the middle school, there are five sports in the fall, four in winter, and three in the spring.
Chelsea is in the Southeast Conference, and has won several championships. Chelsea hosts many tournaments because area teams are welcomed and the facilities are top notch. The weight room, for example, has been well used.
All revenue from ticket sales goes into a general fund to help all sports, not just the well-attended ones. Chelsea has 20 of the 31 sports funded by the school, and 11 are self-funded.
There are programs to develop leadership and empower girls. Girls are also welcome to join boy’s sports if they wish.
