(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)
Last Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Chelsea School District Director of Special Education and Title IX Coordinator Lisa Nickel, and from District Superintendent Mike Kapolka.
Nickel spoke about the opening of the Pierce Lake Childhood Center on Aug. 28. The students enrolled now are part of the classes of 2036 and 2037.
Now, all their programs, (outlined below), are under one roof. The building had not been used by the district to teach children for more years than it had originally been open.
Kapolka spoke about the Special Education Millage Renewal. The millage will not raise taxes, and since instruction is required to be provided by law, would have to be taken from the school’s general fund if not approved.
We were pleased to present our annual contribution to support students of families needing financial assistance.
The Aktion Club at St. Louis Center, (part of the Kiwanis family of clubs), was able to start a gardening program for residents at St. Louis last spring thanks to a generous grant from the Chelsea Area Garden Club. Residents have taken the responsibility to work the garden, and reaped the benefits.
