Chelsea Kiwanis Club Hears from Director of Special Education and Early Childhood

Be sure to visit the Chelsea Kiwanis Food Trailer while you’re at the Chelsea Community Fair.

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Last Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Lisa Nickel, director of Special Education and Early Childhood at Chelsea School District.

She reviewed all the programs offered, including a year-round preschool program with before and after care.

She has been with the school district for over 30 years, first as a special education teacher at North Creek Elementary, then as principal at South Meadows, before her present position. She has been recognized as the most enthusiastic person in the school system. Students can come from outside the district to attend, as the programs and staff in Chelsea are of such high quality.

The curriculum is substantial. Children’s skills are regularly checked to prepare them for kindergarten. Children are learning speaking and listening by being asked open-ended questions. They practice writing/coloring, math, social studies, and conflict resolution. Large motor skills are improved in the playground, where they can learn to ride tricycles. There are three family events, fall, winter, and spring with games, activities, and food.

A graduation ceremony celebrates moving on to kindergarten. About a third of this fall’s incoming 150-180 student kindergarten class will come from this preschool.

She thanked the organizations that partner with the preschool – Chelsea District Library. Chelsea Fire Authority, Chelsea Senior Center, United Way, Chelsea Police Department, local dentists, and the Kiwanis Club of Chelsea.

To learn more, attend the open house on Sept. 8.

Please stop by the Kiwanis food concession trailer at the Chelsea Community Fair from Sunday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Aug. 27, located next to the main arena.

Prices on knackwurst, hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, nachos, and pop have remained the same as last year.

All profits from the event are used to support groups in the community, especially those that benefit children. Please consider lending a hand at the fair by working a shift in the trailer.
