Chelsea Kiwanis Club/One World One Family MLK Jr. Day Youth Essay Contest Winners

The Kiwanis Club of Chelsea sponsored a youth essay contest with One World One Family Chelsea as part of Chelsea’s 2023 Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service/Social Action.

Middle school students were asked how they can promote non-violence in your school and community. Elementary school children were asked to draw pictures.

The winners are included in this story.

A Nonviolent Community

Martin Luther King Jr. promoted nonviolence in his community by marching, giving information to the people through speeches, meeting with leaders to form coalitions, and even going to jail for his beliefs.

These are very amazing big actions, but he also did quieter things that do not get as much attention, but also helped change the world. I do and I will continue to do the quieter things.

For example, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke up for people that were being treated unfairly even if it didn’t directly affect him, like poor people.

In my life, I will always stand up for people who are being treated unfairly or bullied.

I will do it in a non-violent way by using my words and asking my friends to help me. So hopefully if people see me doing this they will also help people who need it.

This will promote a non-violent community and a caring community.

Elementary School students were asked to draw a picture and describe what your picture is showing about what Dr. King did to make life better for people.
