Last Monday we heard from Lisa Allmendinger, publisher of the online news outsource – Chelsea Update. She lamented the state of journalism nowadays. Thirty or forty years ago, before the internet and social media, news from newspapers and television was regarded by most people as pretty much true. Today, it is much harder for the public to get a balanced picture with acute polarization of the news unless people listen to both sides. Unfortunately, that is rarely done.

Causes of the problem stem from tightening budgets at traditional news organizations, e.g. fewer copy editors, and management’s focus on pleasing shareholders in an environment where information can be found from countless sources.

Allmendinger had a dream when she left a full-time job at annarbor.com to start her own news organization in Chelsea. She now covers all the important activities in Chelsea. For the last eight years, she has worked with two reporters, Crystal Hayduk and Lisa Carolin, and two photographers, Alan Ashley and Burrill Strong to improve news coverage.

She feels folks in Chelsea are special, and she thanks them for reading and contributing to her efforts. Her growing readership is a testament to the value of Chelsea Update.

Next Monday, the club has an open meeting followed by our monthly meeting of the board of directors.

Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to enjoy our speakers and learn about Kiwanis.
