Chelsea Kiwanis fundraiser nut sale at Saturday Chelsea Farmers Markets

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Cynthia Hungerford-Pailla, Michigan District of Kiwanis Membership Chair, and Kate Ankenbauer, program coordinator for SRSLY at its meeting last week.

Substance abuse prevention for ages 10-15 years old has been SRSLY’s main focus for years. Recently, youth mental health has been added as a focus. SRSLY is a community coalition working with 5 Healthy Towns and volunteers delivering the prevention message in a positive way to children.

Kate has recently joined SRSLY, and feels it is a perfect job for her skills and interests. In high school, she was a volleyball coach, supporting her teammates. Sadly, she lost a friend to untreated post-traumatic stress disorder. In college, she was also connecting with students during welcome week, offering support to new arrivals. Later, she worked with Bear Hug Foundation in Birmingham, Michigan, giving scholarships to kids for summer camp as a positive role model.

Saturday afternoon club members will be working with Key Club members on our annual raking leaves project. Chelsea Senior Center receives requests from folks who would like that service for their yard. We plan to enjoy the great weather.

The club’s 2nd Annual Mixed Nut and Chocolate Sale continues. We will be at Chelsea Farmer’s Market for the last market of the year on Saturday, Nov. 14. Any Kiwanian can help secure the nuts and chocolate, and our Facebook page can be used to order as well.

The 2.25-pound cans of nuts include cashews, almonds, pecans, Brazils, and pistachios (no peanuts). The 2-pound tin of candies includes dark chocolate covered almonds and pretzels, milk chocolate cashews and raisins, double-dipped chocolate peanuts, peanut butter pretzels, and milk chocolate toffee peanuts.

The price is $25 per can for either product.

To order, visit our Facebook page to “send message” with your contact information and order: http://www.facebook.com/kiwanisclubofchelsea or ask any local Kiwanian. Or call John Knox at 248-921-9222 or Jim Randolph at 734-474-9012.

Thanks in advance for your continuing support of Chelsea Kiwanis and by extension, the entire Chelsea area community.

Although the club is meeting via Zoom, normally, Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.
