Chelsea Kiwanis to hear about Chelsea Update

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Last Monday, Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Lindsay Baker, SRSLY director.

SRSLY is working to empower youth to make wise choices with regard to avoiding drugs and alcohol.

Students have been surveyed about their use of those substances, and the results show that only a small minority partake. Despite the data, many still believe use is far more widespread.

SRSLY visits students in middle and high school classrooms every month to emphasize that abstinence is in the vast majority. The effort is called Positive Social Norming which is part of Project Success.

Each month’s visit is a different topic. One month, students who hadn’t had a puff from a cigarette enjoyed cheese puffs. Another month’s topic centered on parental support for kids doing fun things.

The club presented Baker with a check to aid in SRSLY’s program.

Monday, Lisa Allmendinger, publisher of Chelsea Update, will update members about Chelsea’s online daily news source. “All the News That’s Fit to Post About Chelsea, Michigan” is online at www.chelseaupdate.com.

Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to enjoy our speakers and learn about Kiwanis.
