Chelsea Lions Club offers free eye screening at The TreeHouse on Nov. 2

The Chelsea Lions Club will hold a free eye screening for people from 9 months and up on Friday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at The Chelsea TreeHouse, 1101 South Main St.

“Our main objective is to do kids 5 years old and under to catch eye problems before the child starts school or can even talk,” according to information about the event.

The screening is part of the Lions project called “Project KidSight,” and is done in conjunction with Dr. Paula Koch of Cherry Optometry.

The Lions Club, with the help of a generous grant from the Michigan Braille Transcribing Fund, has purchased the latest and best tool in providing vision screening for preschool children called the “PediaVision Assessment Solution,” which allows professionals to find indications of vision problems in children as young as six months old, according to information about the event.

“The age-based criteria means that we can accurately screen all preschool children for indicators of near sightedness, far sightedness, astigmatism, unequal refractive powers, corneal occlusions, unequal pupil sizes, and eye alignment problems,” according to the information.

Here’s what happens. After setting up the equipment, Lions volunteers screen each child from a distance of about 3 feet. Children can sit by themselves, on a lap, in a stroller or high chair, or even in a crib.

The scanner takes continuous infrared photographs until the required information is acquired and the process usually takes less than 10 seconds. The images are then analyzed and a “pass” or “refer” report is generated. This report will be given to the parent or guardian.

In the case of a “refer,” the parent or guardian will receive a referral packet which includes a “to do” list and an evaluation form to be taken to the eye care professional.

Normally, the Lions do KidSight screenings at local daycare centers or pre-schools, and this will be the first time they will work with Cherry Optometry and the TreeHouse.
