Chelsea Lions Club to dissolve without new members

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Chuck Armstrong for the information in this story.)

After 42 years, the Chelsea Lions Club is showing the sign of the times and may be dissolved.

Like so many of the community service organizations in the US, they are having a hard time recruiting new members.

The club membership has grown older with few new active members.  With the older membership, it continues to get harder to generate funds and do the community projects.

What will that mean to the community of Chelsea?

  • 2 less Chelsea High School Seniors will get scholarships
  • 30 families will not get holiday turkeys at Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • 200 kids between 6 months and 5 years old will not have free yearly eye screening
  • Several needy people per year will have to find other means to get eye exams and basic glasses or hearing aids so they can again be productive
  • One or two less families will have a nice Christmas thru Faith in Action
2 girls will not have funding to go to Girls State
  • Various events like the Senior Center, library and youth exchange will no longer have Lions Club support.

Other things that the lions do that do not directly impact Chelsea are: Approximately 12,000 pairs of glasses will not be collected from the community to be cleaned, restored and given out on mission trips to other countries in need, eye and diabetes research, contributions to the Penrickton School for Blind Kids, Leader dog for the blind and many, many more things.

For the Chelsea Lions to survive, we need new community-minded members with new ideas, new technologies and new energies.

If you are interested in joining the Chelsea Lions Club and see firsthand what we are about, you are always welcome to one of our meetings the first and 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Chelsea Hospital dining room “A” at 6:30 p.m. for one of our dinner meetings. The meal will be on the club for those interested.

After dinner, we normally have a short meeting and often have interesting quest speakers, or you can call 734-262-2122 or e-mail us at [email protected] for more information.

  1. Consider reaching out to the Boy Scouts of America in your local council to possibly become a chartered organization for a Cub Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Scout’s BSA Troop, or a Venture Crew. And recruit the parents to be Lions and contribute to the community through Scouting.
Just an idea that may create more awareness of Lionism in your community… if you don’t ask, your not going to get!
