It was no easy task picking the best decorated table at this year’s Chelsea Festival of Tables.

Saturday, Feb. 24, was the 7th annual event with themes ranging from “Carousel Horses” and “Mary Poppins Cherry Tree Lane” to “Lighting the Way to Learning” and “Chelsea Action Social Justice”.

Attendees voted for their favorite table, and the winner of the Golden Plate Award was The Material Girls with their table “The Magic of Giving with Mickey, Minnie, and the Material Girls”.

“We’re an organization of about one hundred local women that get together monthly and create items for five holiday bazaars in December,” said Janie Brooks, a member of the Material Girls.

The Material Girls also won the Committee LOL Award.

Denise Cugliari with Chelsea Area Festivals and Events and “A Pirate’s Life For Me” won the OMG Award; Kitty Golding and Angie McKinley with Kitty and Co. and “Feast in the Forest” won the New Kid on the Block Award; Mary Williams with Chelsea Senior Center Craft Group and “Springtime Fantasy” won the OCD Award.

“We were hoping to create an environment to welcome spring,” said Williams, whose husband Gerald Williams built a matching arbor that stood adjacent to the group’s table.

“We wanted to do a table pertaining to crafts and included birdhouses and watering cans,” said Craft group member Eleanor Maurer.

Dana McGrath, owner of La Maison in downtown Chelsea, and Elizabeth Teige, chose the “French Farmhouse” theme for their table.

“I think French decor has a universal appeal,” said McGrath.

There was a preview of the event Friday night, Feb. 23, that Trinh Pifer, executive director of the Chelsea Senior Center, said had a great turnout.

“Festival of Tables sold out in less than two weeks,” said Pifer. “We have 19 tables including eight brand new groups this year. We decided to have the proceeds benefit Chelsea Meals on Wheels because there’s a lot of uncertainty in funding.”

Chelsea High School students from the Key Club and the National Honor Society volunteered at the event, which was sponsored by the Five Healthy Towns Foundation. A Michigan-inspired lunch was provided by Mike (Smitty) Hickey from Hell, Mich., who made beef pasties, salads, and Turtle chocolate brownies.
