Chelsea Parks Commission members are closing in on a plan for Pierce Park. At the Aug. 28 meeting, they talked about a few play structures that are being considered for purchase as well as existing play equipment that can still be used.

Member Jon Van Hoek brought along a homemade diorama of Pierce Park that he made for the Chelsea Community Fair, which offered some good 3-dimensional views of the park.

As far as paying for the new play structures, City Manger John Hanifan suggested the possibility of the City raising $50,000 toward it, and then matching that amount with the help of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Hanifan said the timeline he’s working with is to present an overall plan for Pierce Park to Chelsea City Council sometime this fall with the hope of actually doing work in the park in the spring of 2019.

He also shared the news that City Council approved the submission for grant funds to connect the City’s west border to Sylvan Township’s Westchester Estates development.

The Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission is making $500,000 available per year for the next three years, which would go toward the construction of non-motorized trails.

The Parks Commission scheduled its next meeting for Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. and wants residents to know that there is currently an open spot on the commission.
