Now that Chelsea City Council has approved the Pierce Park Improvement Plan, the city’s Parks Commission is working on pricing for those improvements.
This was one of the topics at its Jan. 8 meeting.
Commission members also continued their discussion of property acquisition around the City of Chelsea to add parks. Possible properties are located on Sibley Road across from the industrial park, at the corner of Trinkle and Freer Roads, along Letts Creek, and next to Beach Middle School.
Mayor Melissa Johnson, a member of the Parks Commission, said that she’s been in contact with adjacent township supervisors to discuss using land just outside the city for parks.
Chelsea’s dog park was another topic.
City Manager John Hanifan reported that there are more than 80 registered users and the park gets muddy. In addition, not everyone is picking up after their dogs, even though the city does provide bags.
Winter activities were also discussed by Parks Commission members. Twelve teams have already signed up to compete at Chelsea’s Curling Festival in February. Hanifan said that people have been asking him about putting a skating rink in Palmer Commons, which he says is a possibility.
Creating winter programming and events are both being considered.
The Parks Commission meets the first Tuesday of the month at 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 5.
I wish the city would buy that former industrial property on Main street and make it a park. It is an eyesore.
I agree with Susan. I always thought that spot would be so cool for a community outdoor pool in the summer and outdoor ice skating rink in the winter. I would guess the land is expensive though, given it’s location. And we would forgo the property taxes that could be collected on that much land. Cool idea though.
