Chelsea Planning Commission approves special use for downtown apartment

The Chelsea Planning Commission unanimously approved a special use permit for a second floor apartment space above Vogel’s and Foster’s on Main Street on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Mike Jackson, owner of the ground floor retail store, plans to begin renovations on the one-bedroom, one-bath living space as soon as possible, and hopes that the project will be completed by the end of the year.

He says the second floor was at one time an office space, and currently, a portion of it is occupied by a beauty salon.

The about 1,000 square feet back area will be turned into a second floor apartment and Jackson said he already has an interested tenant.

“There will be an open air feel with its high ceilings and an island in the center,” Jackson said, adding, “I’ll be adding a new furnace and air conditioning, plus there will be a new window. An existing door will be replaced with an egress window as well.”
